And you know what? They’re not just the best appetizer — they’re my favorite go-to for celebrating any gathering. Plus, with my hard-boiled eggs guide, the eggs are super easy to peel.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the ingredients for the best deviled egg recipe, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
Eggs – Using room temperature eggs can make them easier to peel after boiling. Mayonnaise – I use homemade mayo when I get the chance because it just tastes better (and takes only a few minutes to make!), but it’s totally fine to use store-bought and I’ve done this before as well. You can also use Greek yogurt as an alternative, but the flavor will be different. Dijon Mustard – Adds a zingy kick and classic flavor. Swap with regular mustard for a simpler taste or try a hint of horseradish for a bold twist. Apple Cider Vinegar – This is my secret ingredient that adds tang and breaks down the yolks for extra creaminess. Swap with white wine vinegar, dill pickle juice, or lemon juice if you don’t have any. Seasonings – I season the yolk mixture with garlic powder and sea salt, but you could play around with other favorites, like onion powder or paprika. For a spicy kick, add a touch of cayenne pepper, or simply black pepper. Optional Toppings – For a beautiful display, sprinkle this deviled egg recipe with smoked paprika and fresh chives. I almost always add these to mine.
How To Make Deviled Eggs

How Long To Boil Eggs For Deviled Eggs?
The eggs should be hard boiled, but not overdone. Using the method where you boil them the entire time (rather than removing from heat to finish), cook the eggs for 7-10 minutes to get the right consistency.
Storage Instructions
Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Perfect for making ahead!
Bacon – Elevate your deviled eggs by adding crispy bacon on top. For a step-by-step guide, check out my deviled eggs with bacon recipe. Avocado – Use mashed ripe avocado instead of mayonnaise. Spicy – Kick up the heat by adding 1-2 minced jalapenos or your favorite spicy seasonings into the yolk mixture. Adjust the amounts according to your preferred spice level. Southern – For a Southern twist, add around 1-2 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish to the yolk mixture. Shrimp – Top with small cooked shrimp. (You can poach them, but I prefer to saute shrimp instead.) Place one on each filled egg half at the end. Halloween – Make these with fun colors and a seasonal garnish with my Halloween deviled eggs recipe. Easter – Get creative for Easter by turning these into little chicks! Just top with olives and carrots for the eyes and beaks.
I don’t recommend freezing them. It will ruin the texture of the egg whites.
