If you are a new vegetarian or vegan, missing your egg-free or dairy-free spreads then this recipe is a must-try for you. Though, I heard about hummus earlier also but tasted it for the first time after shifting to Dubai. Initially, when I tried it, I found it ok, nothing very remarkable. My true experience with it started during a time when I stopped carrying lunch from home and started buying lunch from a store near my office. It was a very popular grocery store with a huge area dedicated to different cooked food options and almost everybody working in that area preferred eating there. The most popular ones were the Indian food section and a salad bar. It was in that salad bar where I started loving hummus and had it almost every day, for about a year until I re-started carrying lunch from home. Now when I have turned vegetarian and trying to start a vegan life, I love this side dish even more as I know that I can have it without any guilt and cruelty.

What is hummus?

Hummus is a very popular Middle Eastern dip/ spread. Made with chickpeas, tahini paste, olive oil, spices, and lemon juice, this dip is vegan and gluten-free. Though, easily available in many grocery stores, it’s so easy to make that I would recommend you to try making it at home at least once. You will never buy it again. You can become creative and add more ingredients to this basic hummus recipe to have your own unique hummus recipe like beetroot hummus.

History and origin

Since I am on a journey to see this beautiful world through its food and books, I try to read about the history and other details of every new dish I prepare. While studying the history of hummus, I got to know that the earliest known recipe for a dish similar to hummus is recorded in cookbooks written in Cairo in the 13th century. Aren’t you fascinated with the mere thought of preparing a recipe from the 13th century that too of a different country and culture? Making it in your 21st-century kitchen, equipped with all the modern tools makes it even more interesting.

How to store?

Store it in an airtight container. It will be fine in the fridge for around 4-5 days. You can store in the freezer for around 3-4 months. If you are freezing it, freeze in small boxes so that you thaw only the amount of hummus you can finish. Also, to get the freshness of the frozen hummus back, after thawing add some more olive oil, and spices.

What to serve with Hummus?

There are so many different ways this delicious Middle Eastern dip can be used.

  1. Serve them as a dip with Falafel or any other snack.
  2. Hummus tastes amazing with pita chips.
  3. Use as a healthy spread on your sandwiches.
  4. Drizzle some over your salad as a creamy dressing.
  5. Just take a spoonful of hummus and enjoy like peanut butter.
