Hot Honey Pizza

I must say I’m fairly new to drizzling hot honey over pizza. I tried it a couple of months back at a food market and it changed my life. A Detroit-style pepperoni pizza with spicy honey drizzled over?! It was heaven at first bite.

How do you make hot honey?

You can really make hot honey any way you fancy. Many recipes use chilli flakes, others use fresh chilli and some use various different spicy sauces. I opt for chilli flakes to pack in most of the heat, combined with a dash of hot sauce to add a vinegary flavour too, which in turn cuts through the sweetness of the honey. For best results, I recommend combining the ingredients and gently warming them. This way the chilli flakes will be able to infuse the honey more efficiently, as opposed to just mixing everything together.

Garlic Flatbread Pizza

A shop-bought garlic flatbread makes the PERFECT base for a pizza and I have no shame in saying so. It’s clearly not authentic, but it is rather efficient.

What kind of flatbread should I use?

You’ll find them in most supermarkets in some form or variation. They’ll come in different shapes and thicknesses, but typically they average out to be the same size. For reference, I get mine from Sainsbury’s and they are 210g/7.4oz and 24x18cm/9×7″.

What toppings should I use?

I’d say pepperoni or something similar is essential, just to offer that salty/spicy contrast to the honey. I also like to add some olives and jalapeños for a pop of flavour and colour. Process shots: remove flatbread from packaging (photo 1), spread with pizza sauce (photo 2), add mozzarella (photo 3), add toppings (photo 4).

Baked Garlic Flatbread Pizza

One thing I like to do is to preheat the oven with the baking tray in it. When you add the pizzas to the hot tray it helps crisp up the base and keep them sturdy. Different-sized pizzas will take slightly different times to cook. It’ll likely be around 8-10 minutes though. Process shots: add pizzas to hot tray (photo 1), bake (photo 2).

Can I use regular flatbreads?

Yep! If it’s because you can’t specifically find garlic flatbreads, you could just brush a little garlic butter over them. I also have a homemade flatbread recipe if you need it!

Can I use dough instead?

Yes – you can use store-bought dough or homemade. If it’s homemade you can use my easy homemade pizza recipe then just drizzle the hot honey over the top.

Can I use store-bought hot honey instead of homemade?

You sure can. Most supermarkets should sell it now.

Serving Flatbread Pizzas

The pizzas are done when they’re crisp and lightly charred around the outside and golden/bubbly on top. I typically let them rest for a minute or so before slicing, just to let them regain their structure. When it comes to the hot honey you can really use as much or as little as you like! If you’re at all wary just start off with a small drizzle then add more if you want. Alrighty, let’s tuck into the full recipe for this hot honey pizza shall we?!
