Puff Pastry Mummies
If you’ve been around here for a while, you know there’s literally nothing I won’t transform a sheet of puff pastry into. Today’s victim – a pizza mummy. Realistically you can slice any shape out of the pastry, I’ve just gone for a large oval. Once you have the pizza filling on top, just use the leftover pastry to make thin strips. You can make them different sizes and overlap them as I’ve done here.
Can I use pizza dough instead?
I did originally test this with pizza dough and whilst the base was fine, the braiding on top ended up a little chewy because it’s so much more exposed in the oven. As such, I highly recommend using puff pastry! Process shots: slice pastry (photo 1), add toppings (photo 2), wrap like a mummy (photo 3), bake (photo 4).
Can I use different pizza toppings?
I love pepperoni, but you could use a different topping. Just make sure the meat is cooked. I’d also fry off the veg, just so it doesn’t leak out too much water as it cooks and makes the pastry soggy.
Can these be frozen?
Yes, just consider adding a few mins in the oven if they were frozen and unbaked. If they were baked, just bake at 180C/350F until hot and crispy again.
Can these be reheated?
Yes! Just pop them in the oven at 180C/350F for 8-10mins until hot and crispy again.
Serving Pizza Mummies
Once the mummies are out of the oven, just let them rest for a couple of minutes. They’ll crisp up a little more as they cool (plus you’ll take the roof of your mouth off if you go straight in!). Confession – my partner 100% made the coffin! Pretty neat right?! Crafting is NOT my forte! But it’s basically just made with cardboard, a glue gun and black paint.
