What goes in spicy red cabbage?
To make this Asian red cabbage recipe, you will need the ingredients shown below:
Ingredient notes and substitute suggestions
Red cabbage: Also known as purple cabbage, this variety of cabbage is the best for salads and other side dishes in which you want to keep the cabbage crunchy. You can use green cabbage, white cabbage, or napa cabbage too, but you won’t get the same crunchy texture and beautiful color that red cabbage gives. Spring onion: Chives or fresh cilantro can also be used. Garlic: You may alter the amount of garlic depending on how strong you want the garlic flavor to be. I have used very finely chopped garlic, you can use minced garlic too. Don’t replace fresh garlic with garlic powder in this recipe. Red pepper flakes: You can also use finely chopped fresh red chilies or chili oil to make the cabbage spicy. White sesame seeds: Use toasted white sesame seeds, they will be more flavorful and crunchy. Vegetarian oyster sauce: If you are not vegetarian use regular oyster sauce. Also, feel free to use any other Asian stir-fry sauce which you like. Cooking oil: Use a neutral flavored oil of choice like vegetable oil or canola oil. Vinegar: Rice vinegar is the best for Asian recipes but you can also use distilled white vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or lime juice. Salt: Add salt carefully and only if required as the sauces are also savory. Palm sugar: It balances all the other flavors of this red cabbage dish. You can also add brown sugar, jaggery powder, maple syrup, or honey.

Recipe tips, tricks, and variation suggestions
This Asian salad can also be made with green cabbage, white cabbage, or napa cabbage. Two cloves of garlic make this salad very garlicky. If you want a milder garlic flavor, add less garlic. Ground black pepper can also be added to this dish for more flavor and kick. You can also add roasted peanuts or cashew nuts for crunch. Ingredients like thinly sliced red onions, bean sprouts, and enoki mushrooms can be added too. If using enoki mushrooms, blanch them for 1-2 minutes before adding to the salad.
