How to freeze fruits for smoothies?

I love fruits and always freeze some when they are in season. This way I can enjoy them throughout the year especially, in smoothies. I live in Dubai where though blueberries are easily available in almost every grocery store, they are very expensive as they are exported from other countries. However, every year there is a small duration of around 1-2 weeks when they are sold at almost 1/10th of their regular price. That’s the time when I buy them in bulk, freeze them, and then enjoy my blueberry breakfast smoothie throughout the year. You can freeze almost every fruit. If you also want to freeze seasonal fruits and are not sure how to do that, the following tips might be useful:

Wash and dry the fruit. If the fruit is big in size like mango, watermelon, or apple cut them into small pieces. Small fruits and berries like blueberries, grapes, etc. can be frozen whole. The fruits with inedible peel like banana and watermelon should be peeled before freezing.I prefer to freeze whole peeled banana instead of chopping it before freezing. This helps me in using the exact number of frozen bananas given in the recipe I am making. Also, chopping frozen bananas with a basic kitchen knife is not tough.First, freeze the fruits on a tray. Spread them in a single layer on a tray lined with parchment paper and freeze for a few hours. Once they are fully frozen shift them to zip lock bags or freezer-safe containers and then freeze. Pre-freezing the fruits prevents sticking of fruit pieces to each other.

How long do frozen fruits last?

Frozen fruits remain fine in the freezer for around a year if stored properly. However, it’s best to use them within 8 months. Once you thaw a frozen fruit, don’t re-freeze it.
